たやす【絶やす】

1 〔絶滅させる〕 eradicate; exterminate; put an end to…; 〔死滅させる〕 let sth die out.

●根を絶やす let the roots (of a plant) die; eradicate 《a disease》

・害虫を絶やす exterminate harmful insects [vermin]

・悪弊を絶やす eradicate corrupt practices [abuses].

2 〔なくす･なくなったままにしておく〕 allow sth to run out; run out of….

●火を絶やす let the fire go [die] out

・酒を絶やす do not replenish one's store of sake; run [be] out of sake

・笑顔を絶やさずに with a constant smile on one's face.

●火種を絶やしてしまった. Now there is no live coal to start the fire with.

・伝統の火を絶やすな. Don't let the fire of tradition go out.
